چکیده

Several data assimilation and forecast experiments are undertaken to determine the impact of special observations taken during the second Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment (VORTEX2) on forecasts of the 5 June 2009 Goshen County, Wyoming, supercell. The data used in these experiments are those from the Mobile Weather Radar, 2005 X‐band, Phased Array (MWR‐05XP), two mobile mesonets (MM), and several mobile sounding units. Data sources are divided into “routine,” including those from operational Weather Surveillance Radars‐1988 Doppler (WSR‐88Ds) and the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) network, and “special” observations from the VORTEX2 project. VORTEX2 data sources are denied individually from a total of 6 ensemble square root filter (EnSRF) data assimilation and forecasting experiments. The EnSRF data assimilation uses 40 ensemble members on a 1 km grid nested inside a 3 km grid. Each experiment assimilates data every 5 minutes for 1 hour, followed by a 1‐hour forecast. All experiments are able to reproduce the basic evolution of the supercell, though the impact of the V2 observations was mixed. The V2 sounding data decreased the mesocyclone intensity in the latter stages of the forecast, consistent with observations. The MWR‐05XP data increased the forecast vorticity above approximately 1 km AGL in all experiments and had little impact on forecast vorticity below 1 km AGL. The MM data had negative impacts on the intensity of the low‐level mesocyclone, by decreasing the vertical vorticity and indirectly by decreasing the buoyancy of the inflow.

The tempest unmanned aircraft system for in situ observations of tornadic supercells: Design and VORTEX2 flight results

This paper reports results from field deployments of the Tempest Unmanned Aircraft System, the first of its kind of unmanned aircraft system designed to perform in situ sampling of supercell thunderstorms, including those that produce tornadoes. A description of the critical system components, consisting of the unmanned aircraft, ground support vehicles, communications network, and custom softw...

Impacts of Initial Estimate and Observation Availability on Convective-Scale Data Assimilation with an Ensemble Kalman Filter

The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) uses an ensemble of short-range forecasts to estimate the flow-dependent background error covariances required in data assimilation. The feasibility of the EnKF for convective-scale data assimilation has been previously demonstrated in perfect-model experiments using simulated observations of radial velocity from a supercell storm. The present study further exp...

ERAD 2012 - THE SEVENTH EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON RADAR IN METEOROLOGY AND HYDROLOGY EnKF assimilation of storm-scale, mobile Doppler radar data for high-resolution analyses of a weakly tornadic supercell

Recent efforts to include mobile and other non-standard ground-based radar data in ensemble analyses of severe convective storms have yielded promising results (e.g., Marquis et al. 2010; Snook et al. 2011; Tanamachi et al. 2012). During Project VORTEX2 (Wurman et al. 2010), the field phase of which occurred in spring 2009 and spring 2010, coordinated mobile Doppler radar deployments resulted i...

Empirical Prediction Intervals for County Population Forecasts

Population forecasts entail a significant amount of uncertainty, especially for long-range horizons and for places with small or rapidly changing populations. This uncertainty can be dealt with by presenting a range of projections or by developing statistical prediction intervals. The latter can be based on models that incorporate the stochastic nature of the forecasting process, on empirical a...

The Effect of Climate Change on the Yield of Rice in the Rasht County

Given the climatic changes and threats to food security in recent years, they have have become a major issue in agricultural climatology. The present study aimed to investigate the status of agricultural climate suitable for the cultivation of rice in the light of the influential climatic conditions in the past. Given the effect of temperature and the amount of precipitations on rice growth and...
